Boreholes are narrow holes drilled into the ground that tap into groundwater. Boreholes can be drilled using DTH (Down the hole) or Rotary drilling rigs operated by trained staff, depending on the depth of the groundwater.

The assessment of water well yields is carried out by pumping water from the well at a controlled rate while the effects of this water extraction on water levels are monitored by measuring the difference of the levels before pumping starts (static water level) and during pumping (dynamic water level) at the well itself or at observation wells.

Water quality is defined by analyzing it in terms of its: 1. Chemical Content: Hardness (calcium + magnesium), Metals (iron etc),nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), chloride, sodium, organic compounds, etc. 2. Physical Content: Turbidity, colour, odour, etc. 3. Biological Content: Fecal coliform, total coliform, viruses, etc... Good quality drinking water must be free from diseases

The silt at the bottom of the well can often be dislodged by a strong jet of water. The water jet will suspend the silt in the water flow and carry it to the surface as the water fills the hole. Continue pumping until the water flowing out of the top of the well is clear. From time to time you may have to lower the hose further into the borehole so that it remains close to the silt layer.
